Dental reshaping, also called dental contouring, is a relatively inexpensive way to fix minor cosmetic defects in your teeth by removing small portions of the enamel. It may be used in tandem with bonding, in which a tooth-colored composite material is applied to sculpt and fill in the teeth.

How is it performed?

Dr. Scholler will start by taking x-rays to ensure your teeth are healthy. The areas that need contouring will be determined and marked accordingly. A sanding appliance is then used on these areas to remove the enamel. Finally, your teeth will be polished to achieve a smooth, uniform appearance. The whole process typically takes less than an hour, depending on the extent of the work being done.

Does it hurt?

There is usually no pain involved with reshaping and contouring because only a fraction of the tooth's surface is removed. Like fingernails or hair, the enamel has no nerve endings and will not require anesthesia for its reduction. There may be increased sensitivity to hot and cold immediately following the procedure, but it generally fades within a few days.
